Barrow boys have been welcoming shoppers to Broadway Market in Hackney since the 1890s, selling everything from bacon to beans.
Nowadays, Broadway Market on Saturdays is a kaleidoscope of tastes and cultures: stalls, shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes offering some of the best food and most original clothing in London, all crammed into a little East End street between Regent’s Canal and London Fields.
Some come for organic meat, fruit and vegetables; fresh fish and smoked salmon and oysters; delicious bread, cakes and cheese. Others scour the clothes rails for vintage bargains – then head to the lingerie stall for something stylish to wear beneath.
Perhaps that’s why the majority of the people you see on Saturdays live nearby, walk or cycle to the market, and return week after week for their regular shopping.
